The shaded stars in the map indicate the stranding locations of Longman’s beaked whales in Japan prior to this report. Shaded star 1, a 648 cm adult female Longman’s beaked whale found in Kagoshima in 2002 (Yamada et al. 2004; Yatabe et al. 2010); shaded star 2, a 630 cm adult female found in Hokkaido in 2010 (Yamada et al. 2012); and shaded star 3, a 478 cm juvenile male found in Okinawa in 2011 (Tokutake et al. 2012; Kobayashi et al. 2020)
